Microsoft Corp. v. Khoshnood

Federal district court entered $4 million judgment against spammer that misrepresented himself as being associated with Microsoft's Windows Update service. Khoshnood sent spam email directing recipients to www.windowsupdatenow.com, a site that advised visitors to update Microsoft security patches by downloading Khoshnood's desktop toolbar software. Microsoft sued Khoshnood for trademark infringement, false advertising, and cybersquatting. Khoshnood also was required to forfeit several domain names closely resembling Microsoft trademarks, including hottmail.com, wwwwindows.com, microsoftc.com, wwmsn.com, bcentrals.com, and windowsupdatenow.com.
